BS27-1: Financial support drives forward operations
IE SHIMA, Okinawa, Japan – U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 18th Contracting Squadron and Marines from the Regional Disbursing Office - Pacific, Combat Logistics Regiment 37, worked together during Exercise Beverly Sword 27-1 to provide financial and logistical support for the 31st and 33rd Rescue Squadrons as they practiced forward operations.
The team enabled the rescue squadrons to sustain operations away from their primary installation by efficiently coordinating purchases for essential supplies and services.
“Coming out here, we work as a two-person team,” said Senior Airman James Tinsley, 18th CONS contracting officer, “He handles the cash, and I handle the purchases. We're here to support whatever the team needs.” The team also managed real-world transactions throughout the exercise.
Although many aspects of BS27-1 are simulated, the need for supplies and services to sustain the mission is real. Local vendors often require cash payments instead of credit cards, making a designated paying agent critical to successful procurement.
“If they need something, we figure out what it takes to get it to them and make sure the funding is available,” said LCpl. Mario Villarreal, CLR 37, RDO-P finance technician.
This coordination ensures forward-deployed personnel can access necessary resources while maintaining strict accountability for available funding. If a purchase exceeds the current budget, the team works with supporting offices to secure additional funds before proceeding.
By integrating contracting and financial support into the exercise, Airmen and Marines practice essential processes for sustaining operations in environments where resources, payment methods, and support systems may differ significantly from their home base.
Their efforts underscore the critical role of logistics and financial readiness in sustaining mission effectiveness across the Pacific region.
