Volusia County’s Tentative Budget Strengthens Investment in Fire Rescue and Other Public Safety Functions

Volusia County’s tentative fiscal year 2026-27 budget increases funding for Fire Rescue, reinforcing the County’s commitment to the personnel, operations, equipment, and facilities that support fire and emergency services throughout the district.

The nearly 3% increase in funding comes while providing a slight reduction from the current-year Fire Services millage rate. The Fire Rescue District’s overall budget would grow from approximately $81.8 million this fiscal year to nearly $84 million in fiscal year 2026-27.

That increased investment supports the personnel, equipment, and facilities needed to provide fire and emergency services throughout the district. Funding for personnel would increase by more than $4 million, while additional resources are budgeted for day-to-day operations, equipment, and long-term capital needs.

The spending plan also directs $9.5 million to the Fire Rescue Capital Fund for a new Fire Station 47 in the Barberville area. The spending plan also invests in additional needs such as a special operations truck, a brush truck, self-contained breathing apparatus, and other personal protection tools and equipment used by Fire Rescue personnel.

The investment is part of the County’s broader commitment to public safety. Of the approximately $455.5 million in property tax revenue included in the tentative fiscal year 2026-27 budget, approximately $254.6 million, or nearly 56%, is allocated to public safety.

The fiscal year 2026-27 budget and millage rates will return to the County Council for final consideration during the second and final public budget hearing at 5:01 p.m. on Sept. 22.
