US Households See Higher Inflation, Struggle with Finances—Survey

(MENAFN) Short-term inflation expectations among consumers in the United States climbed in March, while confidence in personal financial conditions declined, according to a recent survey released Tuesday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Data from the survey, as stated by reports, shows that median expectations for inflation over the next year rose by 0.4 percentage points, reaching 3.4%. Projections for the three-year period ahead also edged higher by 0.1 percentage points to 3.1%, while five-year expectations remained steady at 3%.

In terms of specific goods, expectations for gasoline price increases over the next year surged significantly. The anticipated rise jumped by 5.3 percentage points to 9.4% in March, marking the highest level recorded since March 2022, according to.

Findings related to the labor market presented a mixed picture. The average perceived likelihood of securing a new job after losing one’s current position increased by 1.9 percentage points to 45.9%. At the same time, concerns about job security also rose slightly, with the perceived probability of losing a job within the next year climbing by 0.6 percentage points to 14.4%.

The survey further indicated a decline in how households view their current financial situations compared to a year earlier. More participants reported worsening conditions, while fewer said their finances had improved.

Looking ahead, expectations for household finances over the next 12 months also weakened.

The proportion of respondents anticipating a deterioration in their financial situation reached its highest level since April of last year, according to reports.
